As busy women on the go, stress comes easily and frequently for us. Sometimes it’s a good thing, kicking our butts into high gear to help us meet deadlines and move through tasks quickly and effectively. But what about the ugly side of stress? This side messes with our hormones, screws up our sleep schedules, and generally wreaks havoc on our minds and bodies. I’m here to disclose a few life-changing supplements and lifestyle alterations to help ease you back into balance!
B Vitamins have been shown to improve mood by playing a critical role in the formation of serotonin and other neurotransmitters. It boosts energy, improves mood, and elevates brain activity. A deficiency in this area can cause fatigue and even severe exhaustion. To meet your needs, find a B-Complex containing b1, b3, b6, b9 and b12 to ensure you’re getting the benefit each provides. A great option is our Buried Treasure B Complete!
I’ve mentioned this before, but I’ll probably continue talking about it because I believe in it that much! The benefits of Holy Basil are far and wide. It’s an antioxidant with powerful antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s also great for digestive issues, and since stress can cause a variety of digestive complaints, I find Holy Basil to be very helpful in this way. Lastly, and most importantly, Holy Basil is an adaptogen, which enhances the bodies’ natural response to physical and emotional stress. As an adaptogen Holy Basil helps the body function optimally during times of stress. If you want to give Holy Basil a try, we offer one from Gaia Herbs.
You may find this surprising, but most of us are magnesium deficient, and we don’t even know it! Magnesium is an age-old remedy for anxiety, depression, headaches, irritability, muscle cramps, mood fluctuations, and more. Stress causes our magnesium levels to deplete more rapidly. So how does a healthy level of magnesium help with stress? It helps by suppressing the hippocampus from stimulating the release of stress hormones and also reduces the release of ACTH (the hormone which tells your adrenals to pump out cortisol & adrenaline). A popular choice for magnesium is Pure Essence Labs Magnesium Plus in raspberry lemonade. This formulation includes vitamins a, c, b12, and d3 combined with magnesium to help deliver calcium to your bones!
Exercise releases feel good chemicals and helps relieve stress up to a point. There is definitely a limit to how hard you should push your body during exercise. If you exceed that limit, you’re only stressing your body out. This is exactly what we don’t want, especially if you’re already stressed. Find a routine that fits your needs. For me, that means cardio and weight training 3 times a week and yoga once a week. The other 3 days I’m giving my body a chance to recover. Need another reason to work out? It can boost your self-confidence. Exercise improves positive self-esteem and self-image. Even a small change in your physique can be rewarding! I know how hard it can be to get to the gym or get outside to exercise when we’re buried in obligations. You simply have to make it a priority. Put it on your calendar. Do whatever it takes. Even if it’s only 30 minutes to an hour, it’s always better than nothing.
I love meditation. It’s an excellent break from whatever you’re doing and can increase your attention span, help you appreciate life more, increase your immunity, improve your metabolism, help you sleep better and much more. One of my favorite techniques is to simply be an observer of the mind. I imagine I’m a vast blue sky. All my thoughts, worries and emotions are the clouds floating by. This gives me a sense of perspective on things. Another technique is to repeat a few positive phrases to yourself, such as: I am at peace, I am joyful, I am present, etc. There’s also an app called Insight Timer with numerous different guided meditations.
Eat Healthy, Whole Foods
I know this one can be tough, especially when we’re busy and have to grab something on the go. What works best for me is going to the grocery store once a week. I get everything I need for the week in that one trip and plan out each meal so I’m prepared. When I think, “I want to go out to eat” I can tell myself I have meals at home which need to be made before the food goes bad. Vegetables and lean protein are always a good choice for a healthy home-cooked meal. Eating foods that support your adrenals-avocado, nuts, eggs, fish, oats, etc.-is also important. Cutting back on things like caffeine, refined sugar, alcohol, and dairy can also help restore some balance to your adrenals if you’ve been consuming those heavily.
I hope these tips have provided some clarity on how to manage a busy, stressful life! Sometimes the demands of life are overwhelming, but there exists an ebb and flow to everything. I think it provides comfort knowing that balance will always find its way back to you anytime you lose it.
